With 42 years of experience in various claims roles, my solid and professional reputation in the marine claims industry enabled me to manage a field office, then regions, and finally nationally. After taking over my first regional claims office in 2000, I increased the efficiency of the staff in the region to consistently meet and exceed the goals and directives that were asked of us. I built a loyalty in my staff that was shown in their commitment to me and many of the adjusters I hired and trained remained loyal to me for 20+ years.

I have personally mediated over four hundred claims, numerous being pre-suit mediations. This experience led to the successful implementation of a mediation program in 2001 that was later executed companywide. I consider this initiative to be reflective of my philosophy of managing the ultimate cost of claims.

My philosophies for claims handling

  • Resolve all areas of reasonable doubt in favor of the Assured

  • Where no coverage or question of fact exists, any insurer cannot honor a claim. Claims which can be legally resisted should be resisted.

  • So-called "Nuisance Value" claims, claims without any merit whatsoever should be resisted, while taking into consideration if the cost to defend such claims will exceed cost to settle.

  • Pay claims properly and promptly

  • Adherence to laws regulations and standards of ethics.

  • Technical knowledge is achieved and maintained by self-study through formal and informal education programs.

  • Remain responsive to the needs of agents, brokers and assureds.

  • Claims is a service business and the delivery of prompt and proper claim service is the top priority.

  • Collaborating closely with underwriters on account management, developing wordings, and enhancing client relationships

Additional Strengths

  • Administering staff to effectively run a marine claims unit, reporting figures and large losses, monitoring monthly claims activity, reporting trends, and maintaining a cost-effective network of attorneys and surveyors

  • Developing talent either by bringing in adjusters from other disciplines and teaching marine intricacies, or in the hiring of graduates and mentoring them to a path in ocean marine
